ANTARCTICA COMANDANTE FERRAZ STATION

2013

Characterized by the climate of extreme conditions, the Admiralty Bay region on King George Island is a challenge for the resolution of the architectural party, in which some factors are clear and determinant.
The first and most important factor is the reduction of the impact of the architectural complex on the territory to the minimum possible, taking into account the scientific character that the program houses and the issue of energy generation and feeding. Another conditioning factor of the project is attention to safety and operation issues, minimizing the risks of collapse in case of accidents.

The adopted approach arose from the interpretation of the conditions suggested in the term of reference and the distribution of spaces in blocks by the sectors: private, social, services, operation/maintenance and laboratories. The issue of logistics limitations for both execution and maintenance and future modifications was also considered, which indicated as the most effective solution a modulated system with a constant profile that allows the enhancement of the performance of the construction in terms of thermal and acoustic comfort, in addition to easy expansion.
The architectural complex, implanted parallel to the contour lines and the beach strip, is divided into four blocks distributed in two parallel axes. In the larger set of blocks, the sectors of laboratories, coexistence and services, and the private housing sector are distributed. In the block farthest from the beach, the technical and operational functions are allocated.
The complex has four accesses, one in the laboratory block, one in the housing/living block, and two in the service block. All accesses are provided with the thermal insulation system and the clothes changing and drying chamber. In the front set, the accesses are arranged on a floor below the main one, which does not touch the ground, surrounded by the insulation shell.
The construction system aims at simplicity and ease of operation and maintenance. The modules are mounted side by side. After the foundations are executed, the modulated metal structure is laid, and as the assembly progresses in the longitudinal direction, the parts of the cladding/insulation shell are connected to the structure. In these parts of the shell, the frames and connections will already be fixed, and the local workforce is only responsible for assembling the components through fitting and screwing.
