The project for the expansion of Residence S is located in Rio de Janeiro. The current headquarters was already in operation on the site in the two existing buildings on the site: a house of historical importance, built in the 1950s, and a small chapel, by the architect Alcides da Rocha Miranda.
Within the boundaries of the Environmental Preservation Zone, the project takes advantage of the local landscape, both in terms of the views and the uses themselves, preserving the existing vegetation on the site as much as possible.
The program is divided into two main sectors: residential (with bedrooms, living rooms, library) and support (pantry, kitchen, laundry room). The program demands great privacy, with no connection, neither physical nor visual, between these two sectors.
The topography of the land is peculiar. In two lines that are perpendicularly connected, the site clearly has two plateaus, the most favorable locations for buildings that, however, were already occupied by existing constructions. For the expansion, the areas with the greatest slope remained – in some places the slope reaches 33%, with a drop of about 20 meters. What initially seems like a problem was the core of the solution of uses and flows: access to the support sector is at the lowest level, and access to the residential sector at the highest level.
The introspection inherent in the program and uses are reflected in the proposed object. Despite its large proportions, the expansion remains discreet in the landscape.
